I Need A Ruling

When should you hold a door for someone?

Or, more specifically, how close should they be for you to deem in necessary to hold the door?

I actually find it really annoying when someone holds a door for me when I'm like ten, fifteen feet away. It makes me feel obligated to speed up since I feel bad making them wait.

Yup..I'm easily annoyed.

I hate it too! I just pretend I don't see 'em.

Also, everybody can join humor-bloggers dot com all you have to do is fill out an ap. I was exaggerating slightly.

BUT! If you you do start a site, let me know where I need to send the Tequila/Vodka/Gin...

An excellent question. It's all in the eye-contact. If someone holds the door open for you, look at them. Right in the eye. Then, just before you are about to pass the threshold say, "Psych!", pivot on your left foot and laugh maniacally while skipping away. I suppose, if you're feeling extra randy, you could throw in a neener-neener.

hey nanny goats in panties,

ah, the old neener-neener gambit - but what if it's my boss I'm sposed to "neener?"

I am glad I am not alone on this door issue. I am perfectly capable of opening the door myself and I don't see it as a sign of disrespect if someone doesn't. Perhaps we need to institute a rule of some kind.

I am very on-board with the awkwardness of having to wait too long with holding the door.

On the other hand, I really hate it when I obviously hold the door open for someone and they breeze through the door like I am invisible. After which I cheerily say "you're welcome" in response to their unspoken thank you.

hey slava,

a rule? i think a law should be instituted. Some kinda fine if broken.

hey david,

i agree...that's annoying, and i prolly get it more here in NY, since you know, we lead the country in rude jerks.

I concur---there should be like a 3-step rule. If one isn't within 3 steps of the door, they open their own damn door.

Oh yeah....I've ran to the awaiting "door-holder," only to trip on one of the steps...and dropped my drink. I felt like I was in High School again.
