Best. Trivia. Ending. Ever.

So, at long last, Austin, the dude who runs (or, at least, used to run) our favorite trivia night in a bar (as opposed to , I suppose, in a barn), started a new one (the bar closed...RIP Conker Hill).

Josie, myself and the rest of our 5 person team made it to the bar in spite of cold temps and the threat of (more) snow. Not many others did. In fact, so few people were in attendance that we decided to split up our all-star squad to make it interesting. The two men vs. the three women.

As at Conker, the best team name won a round of shots. Out of the goodness of our hearts, we gave the women the team name that Vic came up with when we thought we were gonna be one team - Kevin Smith's Next Movie? MallFats.

Of course, we only did so as I thought of one that I knew that Austin would prefer - Four Days Till Pitchers and Catchers And The Mets Are Already Mathematically Eliminated - thereby winning us the round of shots (we gallantly made sure the ladies got one too)

Not unexpectedly, after the first three rounds we were dead even, well ahead of the other two or three teams that were playing. The fourth round was "Fashion" and again, not unexpectedly, we fell behind by two points. Uh oh. After losing to the women a few weeks ago at drinking, I knew I was in for it if we lost this too.

The fifth round was "Stuff You Should Know" (no, it wasn't about an Alanis Morrisette breakup). Just crap we "should" know, like how many licks did the owl take to get to the center of a tootsie pop (three).

ANYWAY, we were down to the last question. Now, we don't know how we're doing until the answers are read after we turn in our answer sheets after each ten question round, but doing the math later, the men were down by three points going into the last question. Impossible, right? Wrong... The question was...

"Six Point Bonus Question - Name the six teams in the NL Central."

Upon hearing that, I laughed for a good minute and a half.

We won by one.

Harris Goes To College

As many of you know, I graduated from Queens College, living at home the entire time. Not going away to school is one of my big regrets (becoming a Jets fan is another). My, wife, Josie, has decided to do something about it.

My birthday is next week, and in honor of it, Josie is throwing me a "Harris Goes To College" pub crawl in Hell's Kitchen. I will be drinking till I puke. As I am not much of a drinker and the crawl starts at 6 PM, I expect that to be around 7:30. I am prepared for my frat-boy experience by reading tucker max, playing hackey sack in shorts and stocking up on roofies.

One problem will be that my sweet tooth extends to drinks. I can't tell you how many times I have ordered drinks for Josie and I, and when the waiter brings them, I had to give her the Guinness and take my Appletini.

The problem with that is sweet drinks make for a bad hangover (and I have to help a friend move the next day, followed by a show for 50 elderly Jews later...oy!) I can't drink beer cause, well, I don't really like it (I think someone is bringing a funnel but I think that's gonna be left unused).

My plan is to drink margaritas, but not just any margaritas, as my friend, and drinking guru, Doug Adler told me I have to only get them made with 100% agave tequila, whatever that is...He said I should ask for "silver margaritas." Yes, the mix will prolly give me the hangover, but the good alcohol will lessen it.

Or I may just funnel Appletinis all night. We'll see.

The review, tomorrow (Or more likely Sunday)

Josie's Birthday!

We bought a couch on her birthday. Thoughtful as she is, she insisted on a sofabed, so I have somewhere to sleep when we fight.

We celebrated (the couch and birthday) with a bowling party, cause, that's how we roll.

Aww c'mon! That's funny!

It's Been Awhile

Hey gang!

Between something happening to work computer where I can't get into my own blog here and just laziness, I haven't been round these parts in a while...sorry to the three of you saddened by this.

I'll start up again by telling you I was in Delaware last week - great time around Bethany Beach area...even did a comedy show at Wahoo's... which is pretty much as it sounds.

Anyway, one bizarre thing I encountered was how the main highway has signs posted warning of "turtle crossing."

Has anyone avoided a turtle when going 65 mph? How big are these turtles?

Personally, I didn't see any turtles on the road, though I did hit a few rocks.

Oh, shoot.

I do wanna thank the people behind Comedy Off Broadway, The Clubhouse, and Live at DeLuxe, for having me on. They are all great rooms, with packed shows. Thanks!

Some Things Never Change (And Some Do)

Last Saturday was my year high school reunion. Yup, I brought the wife, just to prove to everyone, that, I did eventually start dating (see pic below and you'll get a good idea why I didn't date in high school).

Out of a graduating class of 773, only about 60 showed. To be honest, it didn't matter for me as they coulda had 500 there and I still woulda ended up leaning against a wall, begging my wife to pretend she was a classmate, so I wasn't the dude just talking to his wife.

A few bullet points (without the bullets) -

- Though I didn't wanna wear a name tag, it soon became apparent that if I didn't, no one would recognize me (then again, based on the pic below, that's prolly a good thing), so I slapped one on.

- I got a lot of "Hmmm...Harris Bloom...the name rings a bell" - I interacted with so few people that few really remembered who I was

- When I informed people that I was, in fact, on the bowling team, the normal response was, "We had a bowling team?"

- My favorite story occurred on the way to the reunion. A former classmate who picked us up at the train station told us that she got kicked out of karate school cause she refused to bow to her teacher, who she thought was too young.

- Maybe I've seen too many sit-coms, but I was expecting to see all the popular kids fat and down on their luck, and the losers to be models and captains of industry. But everyone seemed to be doing well...normal jobs, raising kids, still living in the area (for the most part). Good for them, but lousy for my stand-up act.

- A few classmates gave me an across-the-room thumbs up. I looked behind me to make sure they weren't gesturing to someone behind me but unless they were impressed by the wall, it was me. I walked over. Seems as though I was voted (informally) "Most Improved" - Still not sure i if it means anything (I mean, have you seen the picture?!?).

- I had crushes on three girls during my high school years - one was the "non-attainable* rocker chick," who didn't show - one was the "semi-attainable* cool chick" who did show, but any crush I had was gone - and the third was the "more-attainable* cool-geek chick" who showed, and I still had trouble talking to. In fact, the first time I passed her, I smiled, and think I muttered, "Hi." I don't even remember cause I was so nervous.

When I decided to talk to her later, I nervously fidgeted while watching her out of the corner of my eye (good thing I still didn't look like my pic..I'd have looked like a stalker), waiting till she was alone. I finally made my way over, and once I did, I was fine, talking like a normal person**. Guess I have changed since high school.

btw - did you see that picture?!?

harris

* My definition of "attainability" would be as it relates to normal people, not me. None were even slightly attainable as far as I was concerned.

** This is also me performing - nervous beforehand, but fine once I hit the stage.

Stay Classy, Queens

I was walking around my old hood in Queens when I came across this sign in a liquor store...

That's what everyone's looking for in a wine, right? Slammability?

p.s. my friend said, "C'mon, it's not a chick!"

Ahh, Queens....

I May Be The Only Motley Crue Fan In Manhattan

Last night, I saw Motley Crue at Madison Square Garden. I think even The Garden was embarrassed to be hosting them as usually, when a big name is there, they'll advertise it on their huge board (U2 TONIGHT!) - Last night, the board mentioned that MSG is the home of the WNBA's New York Liberty.

Looking over the crowd, I'd say they haven't found a new fan since 1992. Lotta 40 year olds still shouting at the devil...some even brought young children.

Anyway, I was ready to rock out...

And so was Josie (though she's more of a pensive rocker)...

How was the concert? Well, good and bad - they played most of their hits (Shout at the Devil, Dr. Feelgood, Kickstart My Heart, etc) but Vince only sang about 65-70% of them. The audience filled in the blanks. I'm not sure if Vince couldn't sing them anymore due to his throat, or if he forgot the lyrics (he is pushin' 50). His dancing moves reminded me of someone trying to dance to a Jane Fonda owrkout tape. He also took a few breaks backstage during extended guitar solos, prolly to nap. But I will say that when singing, his voice sounded fine.

During one of the breaks, someone behind me shouted "TITTYCAM!!!"

Josie asked me if that was a song of theirs (she's not a fan). "Um, no, he's hoping the overhead cameras point at women, hoping they'll flash them."

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the songs from their new album they played, Saints of Los Angeles, and Muthurfucker of the Year.

There were a lot of 80's-esque stage pyrotechnics, which always brought renewed howls from the crowd, and the concert ended with cannons shooting out confetti during the Home Sweet Home encore.

Unlike every other concert I've been to, we got on the 2 train...alone. I guess Motley Crue has no fans who live in Manhttan, they were all apparently heading to the outer boroughs and Jersey.

Whereever they live, I'm pretty sure all the MF'ers went home happy.

That's A New One

On the elevator down to leave The Garden, we ran across a dude on crutches. We asked him how he broke his leg.
"A cannonball fell on my foot at a Civil War Reenactment."
My friend asked, "Did they have you bite down on a leather strap while they sawed off your leg?"

Rooting For The Bulls (Not The Ones From Chicago)

For some reason, the Professional Bull Riders Tour landed at Madison Square Garden this weekend. Then again, in a city of eight million people, I'm sure we have our fair share of people who enjoy watching men wearing Wrangler jeans and protective headgear try to stay on a bull who very clearly doesn't want him on for eight seconds. I'm just not sure why.

I went because I have a friend who was able to procure his company's box suite. This means I had access to all the beer, wine, hamburgers, hot dogs and (most importantly) cookies that I could stuff into my mouth (or put in my pockets). Heck, I'll prolly see The Jonas Brothers if I was told there'd be cookies*.

The show started with a bang, literally, in a display of fireworks that woulda made the WWE jealous. After announcing all of the riders and how much dirt they brought in (70,000 pounds, I think), the competition started.

It was pretty much what I expected (though I didn't expect to feel bad for the bulls..I swear, gimmee a couple of years, I'll be chaining myself to horses in Central Park, demanding their freedom). Guys riding bulls, bulls trying to buck guys, sometimes successful, sometimes not. We couldn't make heads or tails of the scoring, though apparently there were style points given No apparent injuries, though I'm guessing in twenty years half the riders will be walking with a cane.

The weirdest part was how it ended. The last guy rode and then...that was it. No announcement, no fanfare, no nothing. I wasn't sure it was even over until all the riders came out to sign autographs for fans at floor level.

I was so thrown that I almost forgot to stuff as many cookies into my pockets as possible before leaving.

harris

* btw - The box is equipped with a couple of TV's (presumably in case what we're there for sucks). These TV's look like they're from the '80's. With the amount people pay for those tix, you'd think flat screens would be in order. I'm jus' sayin'.

Rock Of Ages - My Review

My friend's boyfriend (that word is getting more and more ridiculous as I get older - there really should be a better word than "boy- or girl-friend after thirty years old) is the understudy for the drummer in the off-Broadway musical Rock of Ages, which is a salute/parody of the '80's glam-metal music scene.

Though it's kinda absurd to parody an era that was that played out like a parody in itself*, the play's a lot of fun, assuming you either loved/love the 80's hair-metal scene or have a thing for star Constantine Maroulis, who by the way, was really good.

After intermission was over, and we were all settling back into our seats, the entire theatre was evacuated. I knew it wasn't anything serious for two reasons. Firstly, they didn't even lead us through the emergency exits...we all went through the front doors. Also, the ushers, who make little or no money, were performing crowd control. If you made $7 an hour and knew there was a fire raging through the building, would you risk your life for a bunch of heavy-set people from Kansas? Me neither.

While outside, we met up with my bud's boyfriend, who hung with us for a bit, until he, and the rest of the cast were instructed to meet at a local Starbucks. I'm not sure whey we didn't follow (heck, they couldn't restart the show without the cast!) but we didn't, choosing to stay in the freezing cold.

We imagined Constantine and the rest of the cast enjoying decaf cappuccino lattes (or whatever) while lounging by a window, watching us bounce from foot to foot in a futile attempt to stay warm....

"Wow, it looks cold out there."
"Yeah, nice of them to stick around, huh?"
"Yea...hey...Is that Stanley Tucci?"
"I think it is...let's invite him in...wait, no, this guy's nose is bigger."
"Maybe he got it enlargened for a role?"
"Who's he playing, Pinocchio?"
(Laughs all around)
"Nah, it ain't him... Forget it."

ANYWAY, we hung outside for an entire hour before being allowed back in. I think that's my new deciding factor in how good something is, as in, "Would you wait outside, in the freezing cold, for an hour to see it?"

For Rock of Ages, I'd say, "Yes."

Rock On,

Aitch

* In fact, outside the theatre, they displayed a printout of Sammy Hagar's demands when performing - you couldn't make up anything funnier.

Just What I Needed

So, some wedding highlights (with a few low lights thrown in for flava!)...

Josie and her friends were at Loft 11 (where we got maddied) by like one o'clock (we were gettin' maddied at six). I was home, hanging with Stewie. By two-thirty, I was getting fidgety, and figured I may as well get over there myself. One problem - once there, I had nothing to do. Josie didn't want me to see her, so I just sat in the back by myself while workers prepared the ceremony space.

The ceremony was great - it was performed by Pastor April of The Church of the Ancient Ways. Have to admit that I was slightly disappointed, as I kind of expected her to walk in wearing a hooded robe like a druid. One of the readings was a synopsis of our first few e-mails to each other on match.com (where we met). I'll post it later.

Before the wedding, Josie mentioned a few times how she thought she may cry during the ceremony. I thought my vows (we'd written our own) would assuredly open her tear ducts so I brought tissues with me. They're still in my pocket as she never shed a tear (except when I stepped on her while dancing). I still can't believe that. But, she did look stunning... heck, I almost cried.

The food was ridiculously good (catered by Thomas Preti). Fact is, most people remember one thing from weddings - the food (and if anything embarrassing happened), so we decided to spend our (well, her parents') money there. Funny thing is though everything as awesome, I think just as many people mentioned the hot dogs in jackets as they mentioned the mini-lamb chops, peking duck rolls, butternut squash soup shots (w/toasted cheese on side), etc. Lesson is, no matter what kinda even yer plannin', make sher ya got franks in blankets. I'll bet Obama has 'em at his inauguration. You watch.

First Dance - Just What I Needed by The Cars - We were sposed to take some lessons given our offbeat choice, but we were too busy, so we just winged it. The three and a half minutes felt like about ten, but thankfully, everyone dug our choice and some even joined in (with the DJ's and our prodding).

Speaking of, the DJ was awesome - even the catering staff told me they'd heard a lot of DJ's (obviously) and this dude was one of the best. He said that he was gonna tear the roof off of the place, and he did. By ten o'clock, I was sweatin' like Patrick Ewing in 2002.

The cake was a stack of cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine. I picked them out myself, so you know they ruled. Josie surprised me with a "Groom's Cake," making my own idea come to life! Yup, a tower of Hostess goodness. Pictures to come.

Since we didn't have any bridal party (it would have been too embarrassing for me - Josie has tons of friends, while I have...nevermind), we had an open mic for toasts - anyone had the opp to sign up and say a few words. I highly recommend inviting a few comics to your wedding for this reason alone. Several people told me how much fun this part was. Of course, none of my friends from back home (or my brother) spoke, so it looked like all my friends are comics I've met in the last few years. Whatever...

Speaking of, though our wedding definitely had a unique quality about it, I don't think any one thing was particularly unique, unless, you've never heard a toast end with, "Umm...well, whatever," before handing the microphone over, as Josie's father's toast ended.

The last song of the wedding was Don't Stop Believing by Journey. If our first dance felt like ten minutes, this felt like twenty. Why? Hearing the first chords brought everyone under forty onto the circumference of the dance floor (Josie's brother ended a conversation he was having with his folks in mid-sentence), where they locked arm-in-arm and swayed to Steve Perry's soaring vocals. Fine... but Josie and I were in the middle. Picture that...what were we sposed to do? Well, we sung, swayed a bit, for all I remember, I may've played air guitar....I really don't know. And I don't really wanna know.

I haven't seen the video yet, but I'm curious to see what our videographer's done. We decided to give a girl out of college her first gig. In her e-mail to me, she assured me that she graduated from the top of her class with a 3.907 GPA, and never got below an A- in any film class. So, yeah, I'm curious (don't get too excited...she left before Journey took the stage).

That's it for now... I hate long posts anyway...Will post anything important I forgot and write a honeymoon recap later, or manana.

Live From the Cabo Azul Resort and Spa!

Howdy,

Lots to tell y'all, but if I spend too much time online, Josie will make herself a widow.

The wedding was better than we'd imagined and as good as we'd hoped. This resort rocks (though we did just sit with a Tom Skerritt lookalike, while he cut-up and ate spaghetti in front of us while trying to sell us a time share. Then he told how bad the spaghetti was.)

More in a day or two (or five).

Maybe We're Not Ready For Children

This past weekend, Josie and I went to a bud's co-ed baby shower. I'd never been to a baby shower before, so boy was I excited!

Anyway...

One of the games played at these things is called "Baby Bingo." Everyone gets a blank bingo card, and before any gifts are opened, you have to write down in each box potential gifts (rattler, stroller, etc) and the first to get a bingo, wins a prize.

Here are a few items Josie and I filled boxes with...

1. stuffed animal
2. lead paint
3. vicious pit bull
4. onesie
5. asbestos blanket (when they did get a blanket, I asked if it was asbestos laden)
6. throat-sized pebbles
7. sneakers
8. shards of glass

We lost.

Bachelor Party! (The Speeded Up Final Chapter)

Long story short, we ate at Angelo and Maxie's - some wanted to go out afterwards, like you know, in a normal bachelor party, but I was already full and drunk, which was pretty much the goal of the evening. So I was happy to call it a night...at 10:30 PM*, but not before my bro and I hit Cold Stone Creamery (or is it Stone Cold?) for ice cream.

As far as I'm concerned, steak, appletini's, and ice cream pretty much is the perfect night anyway.

Bachelor Party! Part Tres

After the Gotham show, a couple of friends and I had a half-hour to kill before meeting the rest of my friends at Angelo and Maxie's.

So we went to Duke's, kind of a honky-tonk bbq joint.

My two buds got PBR's. When I ordered and Appletini, the waitress looked up from her pad and asked, "For real?"

"Yes, I never joke about Appletini's."

Bachelor Party! (Cont.)

I started the evening by performing at Gotham. Luck was with me as not only were there a couple of newbies performing (meaning they brought a lot of people), but a few of the comics didn't show. So I got to do about 12/13 minutes for the 50 or so people in attendance, who were very appreciative of my comedic stylings.

Though I don't usually get the free drink that performing comics get at the club, I did this time, figurin' an Amstel Light is a good, slow way to start what was sure to be a highlight-reel kinda evening full of, ummm, highlights.

To Be Cont....
