So, in an effort to better train Kilo*, we decided to get a dog trainer. Christina, the woman from the rescue org, recommended Raja Shah, who owns The Dog Guru Inc. I spoke to him on the phone and set up an appointment via his site.
Raja was supposed to show at 1 PM yesterday. At 1:20 I called him. He forgot he had an appointment as he was sleeping. Bizarrely enough, he wasn't apologetic either. Awesome. He did say he'd call me back when he fully wakes up. I'm still waiting for that call.
Long story short, anyone who finds this post by searching for Raja Shah, or The Dog Guru on 43rd Street in Queens, DO NOT use him.

Maybe he is so in touch with dogs, that he works on dog time where every minute to him is seven minutes to us.

Well, he said he'd call me back in a minute - seven minutes are up.
My guess is he agrees (theoretically) to work with owners of rescue dogs for cheaper rates...maybe he decided it just isn't worth his time -
quite frankly though, whatever the reason, I dont even care right now - fed up with people who say they'll help out, but dont.

My truest apologies for leaving you hanging that day...
I'm at grassroot and work around the clock. With 35 dogs being euthanized daily in nyc; it is a constant scramble and hustle to save as many as we can... I myself usually have anywhere from 5 - 10 dogs; and am usually responsible for about another 20. I work with local shelters; rescue organizations; local police and animal control staff. I recieve about 50 calls a day - of which at the least 5 are people who are giving up a dog and I have to either place the dog into a good home/foster or to find a no kill shelter to intake them.
Working with all non-for-profits/ charities - I make shit, but work around the clock. Sometimes I have to take on private clients to pay overdue bills that my wife is screaming at me about.
So although I can not legitimize my poor organizational skills nor for wasting your time on that day - I can perhaps aim to establish an understanding with you... I did not mean to be an "ass", I became one out of shere exhaustion. But all my chaos does material in to my saving a whole lot of dogs in 2009 from being euthanized and getting dogs once deemed unadoptable into wonderful homes.
Hope things have worked out with your rescue. And if you need help with training - perhaps I can suggest ABC's of Dog Training located in Astoria Queens. They work in the private sector and would gladly invite your business.

I wantr you to know you are not alone. I too made an appt with the "Dog Guru" and he stood me up, never even called to cancel. When I contacted by phone and left messages he never responded. Only response in email he stted he "forgot" because he is opening up a kennel in QUeens and is busy overseeing the constructin. I concur, DO NOT USE HIM. HE IS IRRESPONSIBLE, NOT PROGESSIONAL.
I agree...but not with the "progressional" part - I dont even know what that means.
I've seen his kennel and witnessed the amount of time that he dedicates to helping dogs. He takes the dogs that society dumps and would rather forget about, and gives them his attention and time so that they can have a chance.
I showed up for him to help me with a dog I was adopting and he spent several hours with me because he truly cares. He went above and beyond for the dog that I adopted, and it is because of him that my new dog is alive. Not only did he spend many hours training for the rescue group at no charge, but he gave them a break on the boarding fee and donated a crate.
So if he's a little slow to respond, keep in mind that he's most likely busy saving a life. He's worth a couple extra calls.
Support Raja's business and you are supporting his work to save the dogs that have no one else.

First of all, he wasn't "a little slow to respond" - he DIDN'T respond (and wasn't apologetic at all!)
Secondly, I am talking about MY experience with him...and I find it VERY hard to believe that I just so happen to be the ONE person he totally ignored (in fact, someone else even posted on this very thread that I'm not).
My post stands - If you say you're gonna help, then do it.
Funny thing is, I now own my own animal rescue (www.stewietotherescue.org) and I'm looking for trainers to work with (with paid work) - he coulda been one of them.

I would like to know facts about Raja. Recently, in the past few weeks he has surrendered 3 dogs to the NY shelter. These dogs were rescued from the shelter and put in his care for rehab. The last dog he surrendered the ACC investigated him. All 3 dogs were MILD when they left the shelter to return aggressive as if they were abused. I heard his place of business is filthy unfit for the dogs. I heard he uses shock training. Does anyone have facts on him of abuse or neglect of these dogs?

1 dog was a rescue (who I won't name I can tell you it hurt there business in this community) and they were also questioned by the ACC
1 dog was adopted... that story is she abandoned the dog w/ Raja however, he did NOT reach out to any rescue for help. That dog is doing great being rehab by wonderful loving people.
